The Consumer Expenditure Survey consists of two parts:  a quarterly interview panel survey in which each of 5,100 consumer units in 100 geographical areas were interviewed every 3 months over a 15 month period; and a diary survey completed by 12,000 consumer units for two consecutive weeks.
